AD 203-1944 Vesuvius continues to erupt at intervals and with varying degrees of severity
AD 1592 Roman architect Domenico Fontana finds ancient stones and almost comes across the amphitheater however due to the eroticness of some of his findings he decides to recover the frescoes and other artifacts.
AD 1689 More excavations produce a stone inscribed 'Decurio Pompeiis'.
AD 1699 Giuseppe Macrini publishes De Vesuvio that states that Pompeii lies beneath Civitas. However he was laughed at for such a statement as noone believed it to exist.
AD 1709-10 A workman discovered The theater in Herculaneum whilst sinking a monastery well. Samples of marble were produced. Many of the statues that were found were removed, and dispersed across Europe as Maurice de Lorraine, Prince d'Elbeuf ordered the deepening of the well in order to access more marble for the construction of his villa nearby. Statues and inscriptions are also found that the prince then uses for the decoration of his house.
AD1738 The Young King of Naples ordered Herculaneum to be properly excavated by use of tunneling and employed Spanish colonel of engineers, Joaqu fontn de Alcubierre who digs for remains. The limitations of the findings of Herculaneum relate to these excavations as gun powder was used to speed the process up which damaged certain findings. More statues are discovered along with jewelery and the theater. In 1739 Charles De Brosses writes to the French Academy about the findings although the King had demanded the secrecy of the discoveries. 1745,it was believed that all of the treasures had been found.
AD 1748-9 permission by the royals is given in order to excavate Civitas. Muslim slaves were used to complete the work and during the process the temple of Fortuna Augusta was found. Prior to this we must acknowledge the limitation as people stole from the sites and distributed artifacts all around the world. The King of Naples also kept a large amount of the findings for himself and kept a large amount of artifacts secret.
AD 1750-65 The Villa dei Papiri (Villa of the Papyri) is discovered at Herculaneum which is close to undamaged and contains large amounts of art. Hermann Goering however removes the art works from Naples during WWII which again creates a limitation. Papyrus scrolls are found reaching around 1,787 altogether however most of which are badly burned which proves to limit their worth
AD 1762 Johann Joachim Winkelmann German art historian attacked the poorly managed excavation and disgraceful preservation.
AD1763 An inscription that is found directly identifies Pompeii as the ruined city.
AD 1765 Weber passed away and the the architect Francisco La Vega was put in charge of excavations. He not only planned the excavations carefully but put and end to the use of slaves as there were reports of theft and this limited their findings. The Temple of Isis was discovered.
AD 1770 "Sir William Hamilton, British envoy to Naples 1764-1800 displays vases and other antiquities, some of which come from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Two years later, the whole collection is bought by the British Museum for £8,400."
AD 1798-1814 Napoleon and the French overrun Naples and take over Pompeii and Herculaneum however they then agree to the treaty and leave. The land that is located inside of the city walls is purchased for later excavations.
AD 1806 scrolls were deciphered however a large amount of them were destroyed in the process of the unrolling machines
AD 1865-75 Giuseppe Fiorelli is appointed as director of excavations by King Victor Emmanuel II as the previous director had been imprisoned. Not only does Fiorelli design the insulae excavations and number the houses but invests the plaster cast concept.
AD 1905-24 four styles of the decoration founded in pompeii are formulated
AD 1924 Amedeo Maiuri is appointed director. Plans to leave "domestic utensils in situ" and restore the excavated walls and ceilings.

AD 1943 Allied Mitchell B25 planes dropped 150 bombs on Pompeii in the Second World War.

AD1980 On the 23rd of November an earth quake damages the excavations as walls collapse and roofs crumble. Structures all of a sudden become dangerous and both of the sites are closed due to them being unsound. This limits the evidence found as a great deal was damaged.
AD1981-98 "Excavations on the beach in front of Herculaneum (around 300 bodies discovered) and in the Villa of the Papyri"
AD1997 Laws state that the money from tourists recieved at the gates goes toward the conservation of Pompeii
AD 2011 Preservation of the houses of Pompeii restored and carefully looked after.
TO DATE: 1 quarter of Pompeii left to excavate.
